Welcome parents! I'm so glad you are keeping up with what your little student has going on in Kindergarten this year. The kindergarten team is going to try their best to regularly post events, reminders, and happenings on the home page. We will also try to post songs that we are currently working on in class!
May
Math- We are working on counting to 100, making groups of 10, 15, 20 and labeling with the correct number. At home work on counting- we have struggled with our numers in the teens (11-19) Allowing your learner to count objects around the house to twenty would be helpful! We have learned addition and continue to review it, and now we are beginning subtraction. Make sure your kiddos are ready for end of year assessment in shapes, patterns, and number identification!
Reading-
We are learning about makeing connections and thinking about what we read. We can make a connection between the book and ourself, the book and someone we know, or between the book and a different book. We are also focusing on quotation marks (and other punctuation)/speech bubbles, as well as patterned texts..
Writing- We are non-fiction writing about a specific topic. We will making mini-books about topics we know about.
We are also still working on personal narratives. The students are thinking about writing simple stories about experiences they have had themselves. An example might be as follows:
For my 5th birthday I went to Chuck-E-Cheese. I invited my friends and we ate pizza. I got presents and candy. I had a lot of fun.
It is important that students are using inventive spelling when they do not know how to spell a word. If students constantly rely on someone to spell all their unknown words, they will not be able to pick out sounds of words when they read or write as well. Pratice helping your learner slowly sound out the words they do not know!
Social Studies-We are creating our crafts to sell at the Kindergarten store May 7-11! This is helping us learn about economics and how a store works!
Science- Mammals: what are they? Why are they mammals?
A little about myself: I've been teaching at Sherwood for 4 years! This is my first year back in Kindergarten and I am loving it! I graduated from Oklahoma State University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and I am currently working on my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction through University of St. Thomas here in Houston. I love teaching and I love kiddos! I'm very excited for what this year has in store for us all!
What can you be doing at home to help your little learner?
